The Landscape of Zakros

The mild weather conditions have favoured olive oil farming since ancient times. The adequate watering from the waters of the springs, affects the fertility and the good quality of the fruits . The age-long Minoan trees with the characteristic old tree trunks, are still farmed today and offer the local people the blessed fruit. The valuable knowledge and know-how of our ancestors that is passed on to the next generations guarantees the productive and quality olive oil farming. Great importance is given to the care of the trees, the careful harvesting, the correct pressing and the safe storage of the oil.

The archeological findings in the Minoan Palace of Kato Zakros reveal the bonds of the olive tree of the past with the present. The valuable experience of generations of olive farming has been forged through the centuries. Ancient olive presses scattered, sculpted millstones, vestigial remains of olive presses, horse-drawn factories, modern cooperative of production of olive oil, set the seal on the continuation of olive oil production in the region. Under the ideal climatological and soil conditions, the scene is swamped by fruitful watered olive trees of the “Koroneiki” variety.
